RIAA poses as grandmother.
The Tanya Andersen Case is interesting because the RIAA knew and admitted that she didn’t download the songs she was accused of downloading. In addition, they knew who did download the songs. They even went so far as to have someone call her daughters former school posing as her grandmother, trying to get information from the girl. Even though RIAA lawyers admitted Andersen didn’t download the content, they continued to demand payment from Andersen, only agreeing to drop the suit when Andersen dropped her countersuit. Andersen refused, and demanded that the RIAA lawyers show proof of her illegal activites. At that point the suit was dropped byt the RIAA with prejudice, meaning that Anderen still had the ability to countersue, an ability I’m supposing she would have lost had she dropped the suit as the RIAA wanted. I suggest everyone read this article, The RIAA vs. John Doe a (sort of) plain English explination of how it all works.
