Are you having success learning how to play guitar? A complete guitar beginner obviously wants to learn to play guitar songs as quickly as possible. Many people also try to teach themselves guitar further complicating things. I teach guitar to beginners and I find that many guitar beginners have problems looking at a chord diagram and translating it to their hand.  For the quickest route to playing a guitar song, chords are what you need.

Part of the problem beginners have is being unfamiliar with the instrument, and having to “flip” the diagram to your own point of view.

With that in mind, I’m starting with a series of chord pictures I created for my beginning guitar students. Before we begin here are some things to remember when forming your chords.

  • Position your arm so that your left hand wrist stays gently curved.
  • Your left hand does not hold up the guitar, the neck shouldn’t touch your palm.
  • Press the strings down with your fingertip not your fingerprints.
  • Keep your thumb behind the neck for leverage.

Here’s an image of what it should look like.

This is a fantastic help site for a new beginner guitar player. A little of everything one would need to get started. I have only been playing (still learning the basic’s) for four years. I still found this site most helpful.
I taught myself without any professional help. However , I know I adopted many bad habits and I am constantly going back to the beginning and re-learning from the beginning.
I love your site and will continue to use it. Thanks a lot, and keep up the good works.

This is a really big help for a beginner especially for someone who doesn’t know someone who can teach them the right way of playing a guitar. Blog like yours is a good guide for a starter.
